Winter still has a hold on Georgia, but spring is certainly in the air. Before long we’ll be applying pre emergents, cheering on runners at our 1st annual Dash on the Grass 5K, and installing spring sod. Before you dive into your newest landscaping projects, make sure you’re asking the right questions to find the best sod.
Questions to Ask Before Installing Sod
- Sun or shade? One of the primary considerations when choosing the right turfgrass is how much sunlight your property gets. Most Georgia landscapers choose sod with high drought and heat tolerance like bermuda or zoysia. Zoysia sod also has superior shade tolerance, but most bermudagrasses wither in the shade. TifGrand Bermuda is the only bermudagrass with high shade tolerance; it was specifically designed by UGA turfgrass breeders to thrive in Georgia’s climate.
- Does eco-friendliness matter? Before choosing your turfgrass, consider the ecological ramifications of each breed. Bermudagrass is a popular choice for Georgia lawns, but Zoysia has higher self-sufficience, reducing the amount of water, fertilizer, and chemical herbicides needed to sustain healthy grass. Zoysia sod requires less maintenance and provides more ecological benefits than other varieties of turfgrass.
- What’s the point? Determining why you’re installing turfgrass can help you choose the correct variety. If you’re installing fresh sod on a soccer field, you’ll want sod that can withstand heavy traffic. If you’re more concerned with aesthetics than durability, you can install a variety like fescue, which looks healthy for most of the year, but only has moderate traffic tolerance.
