At NG Turf, we grow several different varieties of Bermuda sod, which is sought by those who desire a drought-tolerant, “full sun” grass that is able to thrive without much irrigation. Bermuda sod originated in Africa, and presumably derives its name from having first entered North America via the island of Bermuda. Bermuda grass can be found in tropical and semi-tropical climates all over the world, and is prized for its ability to grow – even thrive – in otherwise inhospitable environments, such as in high salinity soil.
- Tifway419 – This is the most widely used variety of Bermuda on the market. It is drought-tolerant but not shade-tolerant.
- TifSport – First cultivated in the mid-1990s at the University of Georgia, TifSport is enormously popular for use on athletic fields.
- Patriot – Patriot Bermuda recovers from injury extraordinarily well, has the longest growing season of all the Bermuda grasses, and is the grass of choice for the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Philadelphia Eagles.
- TifGrand – Developed by turfgrass scientist Wayne Hanna of the USDA Tifton Research Station in Georgia, TifGrand is the first sterile triploid Bermuda to exhibit significant shade tolerance. (Translation: it grows well in sun as well as shade.)
